Christmas markets made for dogs in Europe, 2026: dates, rules and tips
Three Christmas markets built around dogs, in Vienna, Berlin and near Cologne, plus which big markets let your dog in and which do not. Every date and rule checked on the official page.
Most Christmas markets are hard on dogs. A few are made for them
Crowds, noise, smells and dropped food: several big markets ask you to leave your dog at home, and Vienna's animal welfare ombudsman has asked owners to leave their dogs at home rather than take them into the Christkindlmarkt crowds. The markets below are different. They are built around dogs, with stalls for them and space to move.
Vienna: Hundeweihnachtsmarkt, 28-29 November and 5-6 December
Two weekends, 10:00 to 18:00, at the Steinklammer winery, Jesuitensteig 28, in the 23rd district. Stalls change between the weekends: treats, collars, harnesses, toys and care products for dogs, and gifts for their people.
Dogs are welcome on a leash, with a muzzle where needed. The organisers ask that dogs who do not get along with other dogs stay at home.
Berlin: Dog Christmas Market, 28-29 November
In the Grunewald dog walking area, Hüttenweg 90: Christmas gifts for dogs, decorations with an animal touch and a meeting point for dog lovers.
Idea: make a morning of it. The Grunewald holds the largest of Berlin's 12 official forest dog run areas, around the Grunewaldsee, where dogs may run free if they come back when called.
Near Cologne: HundeWeihnachtsMarkt NRW, 13-15 November
At the Gertrudenhof farm in Hürth, on the south-west edge of Cologne, with stalls of dog products and services.
Leashed dogs are welcome, but the organisers suggest leaving them at home if you can: at peak times it gets crowded. Go early, or on the Friday.
The big markets: where your dog may come, and where not
Strasbourg (Christkindelsmärik): small dogs in a bag or basket, bigger ones on a leash and muzzled; category 1 and 2 dogs are banned from the Grande Île while the market is open; no dogs in food shops.
Munich, Tollwood Winter Festival (24 November to 23 December): leashed dogs are welcome on the free festival grounds, not at ticketed shows.
London, Hyde Park Winter Wonderland (19 November to 3 January): dogs on a lead and under control, never on rides or attractions; the organisers warn it gets busy and noisy.
Cologne, Heinzels Wintermärchen in the old town: pets allowed; the Heumarkt part stays open until 10 January 2027.
No dogs, except assistance dogs: WeihnachtsZauber at Gendarmenmarkt in Berlin (23 November to 31 December) and the Christmas market at Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna (6 November to 6 January).
Tips for a market day with your dog
Go when it is quiet: the morning, or a weekday. Keep the leash short, and carry a muzzle where the rules ask for one.
If the crowd is too much, your dog may be happier at the hotel. Not every hotel lets dogs stay alone in the room: on HosPet each stay shows it when the property has told us, so check before you book.
Staying for New Year's Eve? Bangers and rockets are banned all year in Austrian towns, Vienna included, and the Netherlands has banned consumer fireworks from New Year 2026/27. Berlin and Hamburg set firework-free zones; check this year's list on the city websites.
